About Bobby Hood

Students often comment that Bobby takes a personal interest in seeing his students succeed and is able to explain a concept in a way that makes it seem much easier than they expected. Bobby focuses not only on the student’s success on a particular test, but also on developing critical thinking skills and a mindful approach to taking tests that will serve the student throughout life.

More about Bobby Hood

Bobby Hood tutors students from all over the United States (and the world) one-on-one through his personal live online classroom.  He lives in Dallas, Texas.

After Bobby became a tutor in 2011, he quickly rose to be one of top 10 most-requested tutors at The Princeton Review (of over 1,000 tutors nationwide). Since 2017, he has tutored students independently.

Bobby was the valedictorian of Lake Highlands High School, in Dallas, Texas, and was a National Merit Finalist, scoring 800 Math and 790 Verbal on the SAT and 35 on the ACT. He attended TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, on a full-tuition merit scholarship.

In college, Bobby earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. After graduating, Bobby worked for two years as a C.P.A., then attended The University of Texas School of Law on a full-tuition scholarship. Bobby practiced municipal bond law for over ten years, with a focus on sports facilities (including the financing of Cowboys Stadium, Yankee Stadium, and the Jets/Giants Stadium).

Over recent years, Bobby Hood has taken several real tests for research purposes and to stay aware of the actual testing environment. He has earned the following scores:  In 2014, GMAT 770 (out of 800); GRE 169 Verbal and 170 Quant (each out of 170); and a perfect SAT Superscore of 2400 (800 Math, 800 Reading, and 800 Writing & Language) under the pre-2016 SAT scoring. In 2016, Bobby earned a score of 1580 on the revised SAT (790 Verbal, 790 Math).

Bobby is a member of Mensa as well as the Triple Nine Society (an association of individuals with IQ scores above the 99.9th percentile, or approximately 150). He is an Eagle Scout and a member of Sons of the American Revolution. In his spare time, Bobby enjoys doing the New York Times Crossword puzzle every day (he’s gotten his average time down to about 5 minutes on Mondays and about 15 minutes on Fridays and Saturdays, after years of practice), and designing educational apps for iOS and Android devices.

Tutoring Approach

Tutoring Approach

I tutor students from all over the United States (and the world) online in personal, one-on-one sessions. While we technically are in a video meeting, the focus is on a shared screen where we both view the questions you missed on the test, and I create a personalized strategy guide based on those questions. Each time we meet we add to your strategy guide, which you can access as a PDF file in a personal Google Drive folder I provide that contains all your tutoring materials. Between sessions, you apply the strategies on additional practice tests to create "muscle memory" for those strategies.

SAT and ACT Tutoring

I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the SAT and/or the ACT.  Rather than go through lots of different lessons, I provide an actual past test to take at home before the first session, and then in our session we discuss overall test strategies and focus on the questions you missed and how to get those questions right on the next test.  Each session we will add to a personalized set of strategies based on the questions you missed. Once we've reviewed the first test, you take another test and we gauge improvement, then review the questions you missed on that second test. As your score improves on each test, you miss fewer questions and we can review the test in a shorter amount of time.

About 60% of my students get to their goal score in 5-6 hours of tutoring, while 20% get there more quickly, and another 20% typically need around 7-10 hours of tutoring. In 2021, my students averaged an improvement of about 0.75 points on the ACT per hour of tutoring, with the students tutored between 4 and 6 hours averaging about 3.8 points of increase on the ACT (and similar increases for my SAT students).

If you're not sure whether the ACT or SAT is better for you, I generally recommend focusing on the ACT. Most students improve more quickly on the ACT and reach higher final scores on the ACT. That said, each student is different, so we can work with whatever test you prefer. The strategies I teach are applicable to both tests, so preparing for either test will increase scores on both tests.

However, the SAT has now converted to its new digital adaptive format, which might be better for some students. So far, we only have four existing digital SAT practice tests to work from, so we don't have many years of test history to work from as we do with the ACT. Some of the major differences for the new digital SAT include:
  • The test is shorter (it can be completed in two hours instead of three hours). This helps greatly for students who suffer from test fatigue or who have shorter attention spans.
  • The test is online, instead of on paper.  Generally, I think this makes tests much harder than on paper, but some students find online tests much more accessible.
  • The long reading passages have been replaced by short passages that have only one stand-alone question.
  • The math sections incorporate the Desmos Graphing Calculator into the test. Once a student gets familiar with the use of Desmos, they will be able to solve as many as 65% of the math questions using Desmos.
Given all of the above, the new digital SAT is likely to be a strong competitor to the ACT, and perhaps may even be my go-to recommendation in the future.  But until we get through at least a few administrations of the new digital SAT (which begins in March 2024), I won't know for sure.

At my billing rate of $350/hour, 5 hours of one-on-one tutoring comes out to $1,750 (for comparison, the list price of the Princeton Review group SAT and ACT classes is currently $1,849).  Please contact me anytime if you'd like to discuss getting started with tutoring for the ACT and/or the SAT!

ISEE and SSAT Tutoring

I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the ISEE and/or the SSAT. Often these tests will include some material the student hasn't learned yet in school (particularly Algebra), so a major focus of the tutoring is helping the student confidently deal with unfamiliar material.

Generally, I begin by having the student take a practice test at home, and then we meet to review the questions the students missed on the test.  After that, the student uses the strategies we discussed on a second practice test, and if desired, we meet again to review that second test.  Often, this is all the preparation a student might need for the ISEE or SSAT.

An alternative approach is to begin with a session to introduce the different types of questions on the test and the strategies the student can use to solve them. After that, the student takes the first practice test at home and then meets with me to review the test.

In either case, I help students approach the ISEE or SSAT confidently after a very moderate amount of tutoring.

LSAT Tutoring

I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the LSAT. We begin with introductory overview sessions on each of the three main subject areas (logical reasoning, analytical reasoning, and reading comprehension). Then, you practice on materials I provide and come back for more in-depth sessions in each subject area once you've mastered the basics. Each session we add to a personalized set of strategies you can apply on real past LSAT tests to gauge your actual improvement and zero in on your goal score.

MCAT CARS (Reading Comprehension) Tutoring

I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the MCAT CARS section.  We begin by discussing your overall approach to the CARS section and suggesting an approach to use. After that, you practice the approach on passages and then in subsequent sessions we begin to focus on more detailed strategies for each question type, and discuss adapting the approach for different types of passages. Each session we add to a personalized set of strategies you can study in order to quickly reach and exceed your goal score.

GMAT and GRE Tutoring

I specialize in helping students prepare quickly and efficiently for the GMAT and/or the GRE. I generally recommend that you start by taking an actual practice test that we will reviewing in our first sessions. By focusing only on the questions you missed, we build a personalized set of strategies that you can use on practice questions to build muscle memory for the strategies. Once we've reviewed the first test, you practice the strategies on materials I provide, then take another real GMAT or GRE practice test to gauge improvement, and then we repeat the process until you reach or exceed your goal score.

Help with Essays and the Admissions Process

Bobby Hood has over 13 years of experience helping students with their college essays and college applications. He focuses mostly on helping students with admissions essays, choosing colleges, building a resumé, and completing their applications.

Bobby works with his colleague Ariel Pizzamiglio to provide top-shelf service for students who want to write a powerful and engaging college admissions essay.

Ariel Pizzamiglio has extensive experience helping others improve, edit, and structure their writing. A playwright and screenwriter herself, Ariel's experience includes consulting for independent and professional writers, and she even served on the board of directors of an independent theater company. She specializes in helping students write essays that will let their personality shine through and grab the attention of admissions officers. Students often feel that Ariel is able to help them capture the essence of their message and see which parts of their story should be featured more prominently.

Students who enroll in admissions essay consulting will work with both Bobby and Ariel on drafting and revising their essay.

The admissions essay consulting package is billed at a flat rate of $800 (equivalent to two hours of tutoring time) to help with your personal statement (main essay) as well as short answer essays. The fee for working on additional admissions essays will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
